CABO SAN LUCAS – GENERAL INFORMATION

Are water, food, and hygiene safe in Cabo?  Cabo San Lucas is likely the most clean and hygienic destination in Mexico today.  Exceptional cleanliness standards in service-related businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and even tours or activities provide North American hygiene. 

1. Water – Bottled water is available everywhere and oftentimes shipped in from the U.S. due to the isolation of the destination.  Drinking water from the faucet is not recommended as is anywhere in North America. However, local supplies are pumped in from a freshwater river in San Jose del Cabo providing hotels and communities water so it is clean but may not taste great.  Ice in Margaritas and beverages always comes from bottled water.

1. Food – “Montezuma’s Revenge” used to be an expected part of traveling in Mexico but in the last decade or so, sanitary food practices have been improved dramatically.  Due to being a new destination with American influence at the development stages in tourism, Cabo has always been ahead of the curve.  Ironically, much of the beef in fine dining restaurants or hotels is shipped in from the United States.  Fresh fish, seafood, and tuna is caught daily in surrounding local waters while lobster is harvested just north.  “Street Food” where tacos, hot dogs, fruit, burritos, and other great tasting meals are places to especially avoid from eating.

1. Hygiene – Hotels and most fine dining restaurants in Cabo pride themselves on standards of hygiene according to North American standards.  Mexican Government requirements in hygiene have vastly improved with frequent inspections by officials.  Some hotels or restaurants have surpassed requirements being awarded exceptional standards of service in tourism.  Restaurants are owned and managed within resorts or restaurants a majority of the time unique to Cabo so tourists can feel comfortable that hygiene policies are adhered to.
